What is Wisdom?

In the tradition of the Wisdom teachings the term "wisdom" is used in its higher aspect. "Absolute Wisdom", "Divine Wisdom" and “Transcendental Wisdom” are some of the names used in the scriptures.

The term "wisdom" describes both

  • the invisble "Sat", the Real, the Noumenal as well as
  • the ability to perceive the Noumenal.

"The energies of all the great world views
straem into Western thought.

Through the co-operation of these varied
forms of thought and energy it is enabled to
exalt into a universal conviction the
optimistic ethical concept which hovers
before it's mind, and that too
in a strength which it has never
displayed in any previous age or in any
other part of the world."

Albert Schweitzer,
The Philosophy of Civilisation, Page 112

In Greek philosophy the formless planes of noumenal
have been called "intelligible". This clearly expresses
the possibility of spiritual insight.

The Essence of Wisdom:

„For Wisdom is mobile beyond all motion, and she
penetrates and pervades all things by reason of her
purity. For she is an aura of the might of God and a
pure effusion of the glory of the Almighty;... Indeed,
she reaches from end to end mightly and
governs all things as well.“

Wisdom , 7,24–8,1(New American Bible)

What is Wisdom? What is knowledge?

“The term ‘science’ describes the ‘epitome of the knowledge of the time which has been systematized,
formulated and secured by research, teaching and literature. The main objective of science is the rational
understanding and the discovery of general truths or the operation of general laws of reality: natural,
historical and created through culture.”

dtv-Brockhaus, Encyclopedia in 20 Volumes

Science: “3a: accumulated and accepted knowledge that has been systematized and formulated with
reference to the discovery of general truths or the operation of general laws: knowledge classified and
made available in work, life, or the search for truth: comprehensive, profound, or philosophical knowledge…
b: such knowledge concerned with the physical world and its phenomena: natural science.”

Webster’s Third New International Dictionary

Conventional knowledge, by its very nature, is orientated practically and materially. Metaphysical wisdom
transcends practicability and tangibility, it is universal and all encompassing. In all high cultures two aspects
of integral science were known: Metaphysics serving the investigation and realisation of the noumenal.
Physics serving the investigation and recognition of the material aspect of nature.

“And now, cor-responding to these four divisions, let there be four
faculties in the soul:

  • reason answering to the highest,
  • understanding to the second,
  • faith(or conviction) to the third,
  • and perception of shadows to the last“

Platon, Politeia, The Republic
